F&O, currency and commodity
Futures and options, currency and commodity trades have their own screen, because they are worked out as profit and loss per contract rather than as holdings. The result is shown as business income, apart from capital gains.
Add a trade
- Open Trades > F&O, currency & commodity and click Add trade.
- In Find the contract, type what you traded, for example NIFTY 25500 CE OCT, RELIANCE FUT, USDINR or GOLD. Picking one fills the segment, exchange, underlying, expiry, strike, call or put, multiplier and lot size.
- Choose buy or sell, and enter quantity and price.
- Enter the charges from the contract note, if you have them: brokerage, GST, STT or CTT, stamp duty, exchange charges, SEBI fee and other.
- Save.
A contract that isn't in the list can still be typed in field by field.
Upload a trade book
Use Upload on the same screen with your broker's F&O trade book as CSV or Excel. Columns are matched by name; a template is on the page. Lines with a problem are listed and the rest are saved.
Expiry
- Index, currency and commodity positions still open after expiry are closed at the exchange's final settlement price once that day's prices are loaded.
- An option that expired worthless closes at 0.
- Stock futures and options are closed the same way for the profit and loss, with a reminder to record any shares delivered.
- An Expiry line you enter yourself always wins.
Where the figures show
| Report | Shows |
|---|---|
| F&O, Currency & Commodity: Profit / Loss | Per segment and contract: quantity, dates and prices, buy and sell value, gross profit, charges, net profit, turnover, and positions still open. |
| Capital Gains: Summary and ITR format | A separate section for business income, with turnover for the tax audit limit. |
| Portfolio Summary, Holdings | Open positions at the last settlement price, listed but not counted in the portfolio's value. |
Profit is matched first in, first out per contract, long and short, with the charges of both the opening and closing trade deducted. Turnover is the total of the absolute profit or loss of each closing trade.
- Open position after expiry
- That day's settlement prices aren't loaded yet. It closes by itself once they are, or add an Expiry line.
- Profit looks 100 times too big or small
- The multiplier is wrong for a commodity contract, for example gold quoted per 10 g but traded in kg. Check the multiplier on the trade.
